Background checks measure fails in Senate

(Washington, DC)  --  A measure expanding federal background checks for gun purchases has failed in the Senate.  The vote was 54-46, short of a 60 vote threshold needed for passage.  The background checks measure was thought to have the best chance of passage among a number of bills aimed at curbing gun violence.  In his capacity as president of the Senate, Vice President Joe Biden presided over the vote.
