Marriage equality and the right for people to marry those that they love -- no matter their gender -- has seen massive amounts of progress in the past few years, but none as much as now.
Two cases regarding the legality of same-sex marriage in the United States are going before the Supreme Court. Tuesday, the justices heard arguments involving Proposition 8 -- the controversial legislation that made gay marriage legal in California and had support from many celebrities.
Today, they're considering the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, which was signed into law in 1996 and federally defines marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman.
Here at 1075 The River, we have an insane amount of support and love for all of our listeners and what means a lot to you, means a lot to us. While many others may sit back and ignore such a moment in our history that will hold immense weight in our future and the future of our children, we decided to not stay quiet.
We've been at the Nashville Gay Pride Parades, we've done events with drag queens and one of our own, successful on air talents was openly gay.
However, we know some of our listeners do not agree with this stance and we are not here to judge and hope judgment will be left for those who are qualified to make it.
Music has a remarkable ability to evoke emotion. It makes us smile, cry, dance, laugh and reminisce. It knows no boundaries: no color, no gender, no race. And that's what we're here to do: play music you love.
We just wanted listeners and non listeners of the LGBT Community to know that we stand for marriage equality. We stand for non-judgement and the beginning of a new history. We stand for Love.
We agree with Anne Hathaway when she said, "There are people who've said that I'm being brave for being openly supportive of gay marriage, gay adoption... With all due respect, I humbly dissent. I am not being brave, I'm a decent human being... Love is a human experience, not a political statement."
